Silver Antimicrobial Combats Swine Flu Virus

A university-supported study has demonstrated that silver antimicrobial additive technology can be effective against the HIN1 “swine” influenza virus.
Testing by Wolverhampton firm BioCote has been independently supported by virologists at the University of Warwick. Research showed that treating a polymer laminate material with BioCote antimicrobial can effectively wipe out the virus.


Dr Richard Hastings, a microbiologist with BioCote, commented: “These results are a breakthrough in the continued fight against the spread of flu viruses. We have shown that BioCote-containing materials can reduce virus numbers by over 99.9%.”

Graham Harvey, a BioCote director, added: “Due to extensive product development over the last 18 months, our new, improved materials have helped achieve more effective antimicrobial and proven antiviral efficacy. With testing regimes like the virus study, BioCote is leading the way in providing high-quality antimicrobial additives supported by robust empirical data as to their effectivness.”

The latest study has added the virus responsible for influenza to the list of microbes, such as MRSA, E. coli and Salmonella, shown to be susceptible to BioCote technology.
