Food packaging containing latex?

Researchers at Leatherhead Food International, UK, has revealed that one-third of the food packaging tested was "contaminated" with natural rubber latex with the highest level in an ice-cream wrapper.

The researchers also reported that latex had been transferred to the food, with the highest level being found in a chocolate biscuit.

Experts from the UK Latex Allergy Support Group (LASG) hope that EU would use this "evidence" to consider the necessity for labeling. However some quaters believe that this is over reacting.

Around 1-6% of the population is believed to be potentially sensitive to natural rubber latex in the UK.
