Swollen Diameter Test for Natural Rubber Latex Compounds

Manufacturer: We are using "Swollen Diameter Test" for assessing the cure state of natural rubber film by recording the percentage swell of the film. Can you please help us to correlate this result with the degree of vulcanization?

John Woon (Senior Latex Consultant): The variation in percentage swelling with crosslink density using toluene is as follows:

160% Swell   = unvulcanized
100 - 160%    = lightly vulcanized
80 - 100%      = moderately vulcanized
75%               = fully vulcanized

Latex compounds are best used while they are at "moderately vulcanized" stage. Do not use the latex compound once it has reached "fully vulcanized" stage otherwise you would encounter cracking or tearing of the rubber films.

A Rubber and Latex Technologist, John Woon began his professional education in Polymer Science and Technology (Plastics and Rubber Technology) in 1968. He continued his study and training in England and worked for International Synthetic Rubber Company Ltd (Eni), UK in 1970's.
He joined the world's biggest producer of Prevulcanised Natural Rubber Latex and specialty latex compounds, Revertex Malaysia (Now a key member of the global Synthomer family) in 1981 and was actively involved in the marketing of a wide range of synthetic resins, polymers (for the coating and adhesive industries) and world renowned specialty natural rubber latex and compounds. He headed the Technical Department of the Natural Rubber Division of Revertex Malaysia until 2004.
Now a Latex and Rubber Consultant with satisfied clients across the globe, he is a member of Plastics and Rubber Institute, Malaysia, ABE(UK), ICM(UK) and had also been a member in ASTM (International) Committee D11.

9) John, I have such faith in your system. Anyone can take a full 8 weeks to check your report on recommended remedial actions. Put it to work in his factory that produce any latex dipped products. If he cannot solve at least some of their daily problems using your strategies and techniques, he should come to me and I’d show him what I’ve learnt from you! In the incredibly unlikely event that he still doesn’t make any headway, I’d volunteer to pay him the money that he has invested in your report!
