Mechanism of Leaching

Manufacturer: Those who were lucky enough to have attended your training had informed me that you have a unique explanation for the mechanism of leaching of latex dipped products. Can you please elaborate?

John Woon (Senior Latex Consultant): To me, leaching mechanism involves 7 steps, namely capillarity, dissolution of hydrophilic materials, migration via semi-permeable membrane, formation of concentration gradient, osmosis, swelling and diffusion. Also, there are a differences between wet leaching and dry leaching and between hot and cold leaching. My training therefore includes explanation of all these factors. Whether my approach is unique or not, I'd leave it to my trainees to decide.

A Rubber and Latex Technologist, John Woon began his professional education in Polymer Science and Technology (Plastics and Rubber Technology) in 1968. He continued his study and training in England and worked for International Synthetic Rubber Company Ltd (Eni), UK in 1970's.
He joined the world's biggest producer of Prevulcanised Natural Rubber Latex and specialty latex compounds, Revertex Malaysia (Now a key member of the global Synthomer family) in 1981 and was actively involved in the marketing of a wide range of synthetic resins, polymers (for the coating and adhesive industries) and world renowned specialty natural rubber latex and compounds. He headed the Technical Department of the Natural Rubber Division of Revertex Malaysia until 2004.
Now a Latex and Rubber Consultant with satisfied clients across the globe, he is a member of Plastics and Rubber Institute, Malaysia, ABE(UK), ICM(UK) and had also been a member in ASTM (International) Committee D11.
