Latex Adhesives for Fabric to EPDM
Manufacturer: We would like to to use natural rubber latex-based adhesive for bonding polyester fabric to EPDM sheets but found it having weaker bond strength compared to solvent based contact adhesives. But our customer insist that we should stay away from solvent-based adhesives. Any advice?
John Woon (Senior Latex Consultant): You should try using MG latex which is methyl methacrylate grafted (MMA) natural rubber latex.
Structure of MMA:
I suggest you add MG 50 (i.e. with 50% MMA) to your adhesive at different levels to get actual calculated percentage of MMA from 10 to 30%.
Since EPDM is non-polar, it would help if the surface is treated by abrading using wire wool and solvent wiping. It would even be better if the surface can be subjected to some form of acid etching.
