Chlorinated Natural Rubber and Solvent Resistance.

Manufacturer: We found that chlorinated natural rubber is more resistant to some solvents compared to the original unchlorinated rubber. Why is this so?
John Woon (Senior Latex Consultant): The modified rubber molecules after chlorination become more polar with an increase in hydrophilicity (opposite of hydrophobicity), meaning high affinity with water. The wetting property is also improved evident by measuring the contact angle, which has become relatively small.
This means that the chlorinated natural rubber is more resistant to attack by non-polar solvents and oil compared to unchlorinated rubbers. However, the chlorinated rubber becomes less resistant to polar solvents for obvious reasons.

He headed the Technical Department of the Natural Rubber Division of Revertex Malaysia until 2004.
Now a Latex and Rubber Consultant with satisfied clients across the globe, he is a member of Plastics and Rubber Institute, Malaysia, ABE(UK), ICM(UK) and had also been a member in ASTM (International) Committee D11.
