Foam Stabiliser for Latex Foam Products

Manufacturer: We occasionally experience high rejection of our latex (NR/SBR) foam products due to apparent insufficient filling of the moulds. The problem persists even after we introduced more air vents in the mould. Your assistance would be most appreciated.

John Woon (Senior Latex Consultant): What you were experiencing might not be totally due to insufficient filling of the moulds with the latex foamed compound.

It could be a result of the foam collapsing before it starts to gel. What could have happened was during the process of filling, the air bubbles (foam) gradually expand and eventually burst. Although at times when the foam does not collapse totally, the cell structure of your finished products would be very irregular, another reason for rejection.

I suggest you add a good foam stabiliser such as DPG or polyether polythioether (e.g. Emulvin S) which at the same time would also reduce the foam viscosity allowing the latex to reach all parts of the mould.

How To Prevent Hydrolysis of Polymers?

Manufacturer: We are manufacturing rubber products based on PU and EVA and customers have been complaining of poor resistance to hydrolysis when exposed to water, acids and bases. How do we prevent or minimise this?

John Woon (Senior Latex Consultant):  All polymers containing ester groups such as polyurethane and ethylene - vinyl acetate copolymers tend to be attacked by the chemicals you mentioned due to hydrolysis especially at elevated temperatures.

On top of the usual antioxidants, you should add polycarbodiimide.
