Heat built-up problem with black latex products
Manufacturer: We're manufacturing some latex rubber products to be exposed to direct sunlight. These are compounded with carbon black. Our problem is that the products being black in color, tend to absord heat to the extent that it's affecting the products' perfromance during their service life. Any idea how to overcome this? Don't ask us to remove the black pigment because black color is part of the product specifications.
JohnWoon: This is a very interesting question. If you believe that there is such a thing as "transparent carbon black", your battle is almost won!
The solar heat buildup of dark colored plastics or rubber products can be reduced by half if you replaced your existing black pigment with this new transparent black pigment which is especially very effective in solar infrared radiation from 750 nm up to 2,500 nm. It also offers excellent heat resistance, color strength and migration stability, as well as extreme resistance to chemicals.

Unsuccessful bid to make REACH affordable
Firms from the European Union were unsuccessful last week in an attempt to make REACH more affordable during recent committee discussion of the bill in the EU Parliament. REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals. It requires companies to register more than 30,000 compounds, most of which are already on the market. Certain chemicals would also have to undergo an expensive evaluation and re-authorization processes, which might lead to distribution restrictions or bans of many chemicals.

Biodegradable Polymeric nano particles for ophthalmic drug delivery
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth, UK have developed a drug delivery method that could replace regular eye drops by using biodegradable polymer nanoparticles to administer medicine to the eye.
Once combined with polymer nanoparticles, drugs can then be released in a controlled manner. The medicine would only need to be applied once, making regular eye drops unnecessary. The drug's release can also be triggered by an environmental or chemical signal while polymer, being biodegradable, can be broken down naturally by the body when it is no longer needed.
